So there we were, three grown men (average age 61), sitting in a car, outside a pub, waiting for the rain to stop. What is it about rain that makes us hesitate – whether walking, running or cycling ? Once you’re out, you don’t mind, but setting off in it, is a definite no, no.
Luckily the Met. Office got it right. By 11:15 it eased off and we set off with our packs on our backs. Four days later we would return to this very same spot.
The route today would take us along Newlands Beck, then up and over Catbells and across Maiden Moor to High Spy (@653m/2142 ft), before descending to Rosthwaite with a slight detour around Castle Crag.
Some great photos and what could be nicer in the Lakes that a drink in a Jennings pub!

Thanks. All of our resting places were selected for their hand-pulled real ale – especially since I don’t get any in Switzerland ! 🙂

What fabulous pictures! It’s amazing what our feet allows us to see!! When was this then? And did you camp or stay somewhere each night? (Or am I getting ahead of your posts, lol)

Thanks Paula. The walk was from the 1st to 4th May and we stayed in the inns shown in the pictures. They were chosen for their real ale. 🙂 Jude & I went up to Scotland after that, (we only got back home yesterday), so I have yet more (and dare I say even better) pictures to come…

I’m glad you like them, but the pictures don’t really do the scenery justice. It was quite a dull day and the colours were not at their best.

Amazing pictures. I’m very fond of Derwent Water.

Yes, I’d say the Lakes are probably the most scenic part of England (even better than my beloved Yorkshire !) There’s more to come of course… 🙂

Thanks for your kind comments. They would have looked even better had the sun come out more. But, yes, we did have a great time.

Outstanding I would say and very tempting, Mike. Hiking in surroundings like these with good friends, then it doesn’t get much better. Stunning landscape!!

Absolutely. A few days out hiking with your friends – staying in B&Bs or Inns – a nice meal and ‘a few’ beers in the evening – lots of banter and a cooked English breakfast set you on your way the next day… Life doesn’t get much better than that! 😊
