The Yorkshire Dales region is not for nothing more simply referred to as “The Dales”. There are smaller dales, which join up with larger dales, which then feed into the main dales, like Airedale, Wharfedale and Swaledale.* Most are named after the becks, streams or rivers which run along their valleys, but the river which runs along Wensleydale is called the Ure. I mention this exception as the river has a series of waterfalls at Aysgarth, which can be just a trickle in the summer, but a raging torrent after a prolonged downpour. And we know what the weather has been like in the UK recently!
So it was that I decided, for my second walk, to go from our cottage in High Fremington, in Swaledale, over the moorland, to Aysgarth, in Wensleydale. On the way, I discovered an area that even I, as a relative ‘local’ and regular visitor to the Dales, had never heard of, called Apedale. (See pics 10-13). There’s even a hill to the north of it called Gibbon Hill! (See centre of the Route map).
With my thanks to Bugwoman for the identification of the Lichen in pic 7 and my wonderful wife, Jude, for coming to pick me up. 👍👍😊
* Wiki tells me, if my counting is correct, that there are 51 differently named dales in total, 37 have water flowing east to the North Sea and 14 that empty west into the Irish Sea.
The rain we’ve had certainly makes Aysgarth falls look particularly impressive! I’ve not been there for years and am probably due a re visit. Swaledale I think is my favourite, a shame the hostel closed down but the waterfalls there are beautiful.

Yes, the falls were thundering over… I took a couple of videos, but my WP storage is running low, so I decided not to include any of them in the post! Another reason for doing that and the previous walk was to ‘tick off’ some of the pubs that I missed on the Inn Way to the Dales that I did with my mate Colin a few years back. As you may know, they’re usually 6 days long and we only like to be away for 4 days, so we missed out that northern section.

I didn’t know WP had a storage limit, I embed all my videos from my you tube account so that probably saves on storage.

I’ve not checked recently but I think you get a certain amount for ‘free’, then something like 3Gb if you pay for the site and probably much more if you pay the Business rate (or whatever that is). I didn’t like the ads appearing and thought 99 Euros was a reasonable annual investment for what’s effectively a hobby. (Though not much has been posted recently). I also used to pay about 30 Swiss francs a year for their equivalent of OS Mapping (which something like £30 a year). Like OS Maps it allows you to plot the route and see the distance and height gain, etc. I forget the name of the website now but there used to be a way of viewing National and Regional routes (walking or cycling or even in-line skating!)
I just did a quick search and this link gives information on the SwissTopo app which is apparently free. https://www.swisstopo.admin.ch/en/general-information-swisstopo-app . I’m not sure if that’s the same one as the one I used to use.

I was intrigued so I had a look at Bluehost, who host my site and I get 10gb. I use Outdooractive for my mapping which has the benefit of being able to embed my routes onto my website.

I just use WP. And I just checked, it seems I have 13Gb though I’ve used 10.6Gb of it! I can see me getting to 1000 posts and retiring (properly). I think I’ve done about 860 posts so far.

You will have to do what I do Mike and cull the older posts to free up space.

Yes, I may delete a few of the videos first and see how that goes. But the blog represents a diary of my retirement and I often look back to see things I’ve posted, so I’d be reluctant to delete any posts completely. I’ll maybe have to cut back on the number of photos per post in future. 😌

Thank you Mélodie. It is a beautiful place and you get to see 3 waterfalls for the price of the parking! 👍👍 😊

I used to live on the north east coast and the York Moors and Dales were the odd weekend treat. I love Aysgarth and the falls in full spate are a wonderful sight. The issue of storage is a pain. I presume you resize your photos? I’m on my second blog in an effort to keep within my limits. Mine is pretty much a diary too.

Many thanks for your comments Jo. I used to shrink them to less than 500k, but recently (within the few years that is), I’ve found WP doesn’t display them very well, so I found an ‘optimum’ size for the different formats. But even these now are starting to look too small (and I lost the app which shrunk them), so now I’m winging it with editing photos by their horizontal pixels, but even then I leave some photos up to 3 or even 4Mb. The remaining storage will soon be eaten up I’m sure, so I’ll have to make some decisions…. Delete some old posts or photos, or give up, or reinvent… 🤔
