Garden Butterflies (Llanfyllin, Powys, N.Wales)

As I looked out of the kitchen window this morning, I noticed a Gatekeeper butterfly. With the outside temperature due to rise (again) to around 32 degrees C, (90 F), I figured it might be a good day to skip any physical exercise, like gardening (again), and to hunt down a few butterflies. 👍😊

As you will see below, I managed to capture 8 of the more common ones in the UK, though I’m sure I may have missed some others. For example, I didn’t see any Tortoiseshells or Commas. Maybe they were taking it easy somewhere too. 🤔

    Wonderful grouping of butterflies, and what an assortment!

    Too funny, I opened up your blog, saw the gatekeeper on that white composite flower (what is it? a lot of the flutterbys were loving it) and immediately started sneezing! Allergies by proxy? Those do look like flowers that would kill my seasonal allergies, but I think generally I’d need to be there in person.

    That Peacock variety is amazing! I’ve never seen anything like that.

      Sorry for the delayed reply, I had to ask my wife what the plant was. She tells me it’s a Laveteria, which she’s only just planted (and is dtruggling in the heatwave!) Though the white flowers on the ‘shiny green leaved’ privet type hedge, look very similar. (No idea what that is but we have a line of about 8 yards of them and they flower at this time of year attracting a lot of butterflies, mostly Red Admirals.
      We have a similar line of yew trees and the Gatekeepers flit in and out of those for some reason,despite not having any flowers at all). Nature can be a mystery at times!
      I also suffer from hay fever, (I can randomly sneeze at anything from grass to red wine!) but the medication I have this year, for my nose and itchy eyes, seems to have really helped.
      The Peacock is certainly well named and I think is our most colo(u)rful butterfly and quite common, so I’m sure you will get to see one in real life. 👍👍😊

      Thanks Jim. I was wondering what I was going to do in the heat! My wife has banned me from taking the dog for a walk during the day (though he does get an early morning walk in the woods).
