Inn Way to the Lake District, (Day 1 of 3)

You may not be surprised to read that I’ve almost forgotten how to create a post! Indeed, as I type, everything looks different, but I’ll press on and hope it all comes out OK…

Yes, my friends and I have been on our annual walking trip. This time to the English Lake District. Regular followers will know that I normally do these “Inn Way” walks with my good mate Colin, (see here for example), but the rest of us were struggling to come up with a good, preferably circular, route and I therefore proposed this one. Sadly, Colin couldn’t make it, so it was just the rest of the gang (see pic 1) who toddled (& staggered?) around the adapted route…

The official route is divided into 7 sections, ranging from 11 to 15 or 16 miles each. However, as we planned to do it in our now favoured ‘relay’ format, (to save carrying heavy rucksacks) I adjusted it down to 6, which neatly divided into 2 more or less equal legs each day over 3 days.

We started and finished the walk in Coniston and the first leg would have been around 15 or more miles. I thought this might still prove a few miles too far, (especially for Liam who’s just turned 80) and so it was re-routed to go via Little Langdale instead of Great Langdale.

We mix the pairings up each day and on Day 1, I partnered Pete and Liam from Consiton to Ambleside, while Tim and Dave drove the car to Ambleside and set off from there to the Glaramara Hotel, in Seatoller.

As you will see from the photos below, the weather was fantastic, though I did discover afterwards that my camera had developed a dark blob in the centre. This is hardly visible on the normal photos, but very clear on the panoramic ones. Thankfully it disappeared for Days 2 and 3…

Yes we certainly were though, during the first half of April, when we had all that fine weather, I feared the worst… I thought to myself, this fine weather surely couldn’t last, could it…? And it did and, thankfully, still is doing. Simply amazing!

Would love to see the lakes without the rain!
Had real trouble leaving a comment but you obviously got my last attempt.
The blot on your photos was probably a speck of dust on the censor which must have cleared.

Yes, I’m not quite sure what’s going on (or gone on) with WP, but when I hit the Approve button in the email generated, I get a screen where I can edit your comment (which I obviously don’t want to do and didn’t think was possible). So I have to click on the Comments option on the left to Approve and Reply… Weird!
Anyway, get yourself up to the Lakes in the next week or so. I’ve just checked the Beeb forecast for Coniston and it’s nothing but sun, sun, sun… I can recommend the Coniston Inn. 👍👍😊 Also I should have mentioned that I saw quite a few butterflies but my mates don’t stop walking while you take a photo… By the time I’ve tracked down a docile one they’d be half a mile ahead!

WP are weird, this morning I was logged out of my own account so had to remember the pass word etc, what a pain.
Off to Corfu in three weeks and just had the daughter over from Berlin for 2 weeks so any trips are on hold as we are knackered!

Looks like a good route and we walked the same path on the way to Tilberthwaite, I’ve just posted a very similar photo to one of yours! Glad the weather was good Mike, it makes a big difference 😀

Small world and great minds/photographers think alike! I’ve just had a look at your post and, yes, the photos and route look very familiar. We were there this time last week (Tuesday). I don’t suppose our paths nearly crossed?

No, it was early April for me Mike, I’m always behind with my posts by the time I get to write them up

  3. […] may have noticed the lack of images of the 2nd leg (from Ambleside to Seatoller) in yesterday’s post. That’s because Dave and Tim very rarely take photos! However, you’re in for a treat […]

You’re walking through where I grew up. Every photo stirred a memory. I’ve been there, I’ve supped those beers, I’ve walked over those summits that you and Mr Wainwright found. Thank you. Thank you for a lovely blog that showed the magic of the lakes properly. Wish you’d taken the road up from Grasmere up the side of Helvellyn, that’s [pretty much my favourite Lakeland trail/

You’re very welcome! I’m so glad it brought back such happy memories. I think the route you mentioned was very close to where Tim and Dave must havebeen, but they just don’t appreciate the value of capturing things on camera. Sorry about that! I’ll have words with them for next time!

Indeed it is. But then I think ALL of the Lake District is very special. We’re very lucky to have it on our doorstep (well, more or less!) 😊👍👍

Thanks Anita, but don’t forget to check out day 2 and day 3… (Oh, and by the way, that was Pete, not Colin).
