After a pleasant lunch on the balcony, watching and photographing some birds, I had a little time to kill before the football started. So off I went up the path behind our chalet. In a way, this was a little foolhardy, as the road has been cordoned off for 3 or 4 weeks, due to some (and by that I mean several tonnes) of loose rock above. However, my neighbour told me that it had been given the all clear, so it seemed like a change from walking by the river.
Now I often say that you never know what you are going to find, or see, on a walk and today was no exception. With all the snow around I was amazed to find a small skull, no bigger than 6 inches or 15cm long. It clearly had some sharp teeth, but I have no idea what it might have been. So if anyone out there can identify it for me, I’d be eternally grateful.
Fox?

I think you are right. We do have a lot of foxes around here and a quick look online seems to confirm your suggestion. I hesitated to say it was about 5″ and the online search suggests 4.7″, both of which I thought would be too small for a fox. But it does look right. Thank you so much for resolving it! 😊

We have foxes in our garden… the proportions looked about right but… Was an absolute guess! 😎

It looked a bit too small to be a fox, though maybe they seem bigger when they are alive! Anyway it was a good guess. 🙂

the white snow makes everything look so pretty! And yes, I was going to say it’s most likely a fox based on the snout proportions and the canines. It could have been a young one. Love the two bird at the bottom! Blue tits are some of my favorite, as I know I’ve mentioned before. Looks like a nice little adventure.

Yes, when the sun shines, everything looks fantastic. I took the 2 last photos when I got home and stood, as quietly as I could, about 4ft from the feeders. Earlier we had 4 Alpine Accentors, which was unusual, as we normally only see them individually. It must be a cold winter!

well, here in England it’s a bit chilly! And given those snow piles, I’d think it’s pretty cold there!

Seems funny you writing from the UK – it’s like the tables have turned…! 🤔 However, unlike the damp, windy UK, the air is very dry here and there’s very little wind, so it doesn’t seem that cold. 😊
