Another well known birder’s paradise is the Farne Islands, which lie just off the coast of Northumberland, in the North East of England.  We were completely blown away by both the sheer number of birds and how close you could get to them.  If you are ever in that area, especially in the Spring, when the birds are nesting, I would highly recommend that you visit.

    When we went to the Farne Islands the sea was decidedly choppy and there were quite a few green faces on the boat.

      I think we were quite lucky as they said nobody had landed for the previous 3 days. 🙂

          Well, you’re in luck… We went in May this year. (I did several posts about our 3 week trip when we got back home). You can never be sure of course, but I think the weather is much better in NW Scotland around April/May. Have a great time ! 🙂

      Thank you Mary. They are certainly a beautiful and entertaining bird. We were amazed how close we could get to photograph them – both on the ground and in the air. My wife got a great picture if one landing with it’s wide spread wings and dangling orange feet.

        There is a live web cam up in Northern coast of Maine on one of the islands that the puffins nest and habitat. You can find it on a quick web search – I found it fascinating. I don’t have the address for it, sorry.
