It didn’t take me long to check out the route which I posted yesterday, (since it was only about a mile long), so I also went to look at another, slightly more varied route, just down the road at Llan Ffestiniog. I’d seen that there was a nature reserve and waterfall marked on the map, but I didn’t expect to come across a rainforest… As the information board describes, (see pics 8, 9 & 10), the ancient woodland in the gorge is of international importance, being home to over 150 mosses and liverworts and rare lesser horseshoe bats. I also discovered that the river eventually flows into the river Dwyryd which runs right past our house. 😊

Just a note regarding some of the Welsh/English naming in both the title above and image descriptions below… I often see signs written in Welsh and English, like Rhaeadr Cynfal Falls. Now you might think that the Falls are called the Rhaeadr Cynfal Falls, but no… They save a bit of repetition and ink by putting the two languages together, since, in Welsh, most times what it is, like a waterfall (or rhaeadr), comes before the actual name, like Cynfal. It’s actually Rhaeadr Cynfal (in Welsh) and Cynfal Falls (in English). It can get very confusing, so, I’ve tried to simplify things by using the Welsh where I can, like Ceunant Cynfal, but put the English translation in brackets (in this case, gorge) afterwards.  I hope it helps!

Thanks for explaining the “mixed language” signs Mike 🙂
Very surprising to know that Wales has its own rainforest. I have read the explanations on the signs and it is clear to me that this is indeed a very special and valuable area on many levels. Maybe it’s a bit of a shame that you visited it in winter, because there is less life to be found there. Still, thanks for the images that give a nice impression of the area itself.

Yes, thanks Rudi. I could have done a slightly longer walk, further down the valley or gorge, but it was getting late and rain was imminent and the hotel bar was calling… 😋 I may return later in the year to see what else I can find.

The hotel bar is a perfect excuse Mike – LOL

Absolutely! They’re the best walks – the ones that end at or very near a pub! I have planned a 4 day walk with my friends for May which does just that- it’s called the Shropshire Cakes and Ale Trail! 🍺🍺😊

Yes, it is a little surprising, but then I guess any forest that gets a lot of rain is potentially a ‘rainforest’ (assuming mosses and lichen etc get to grow)!? 🤔

That looks a lovely spot, should be brilliant in summer for Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler. Surprised you have not been there before.

Yes, could be worth another visit but there are a number of these (quite small) rainforests around here. It’s all the rain obviously!

This is stunning Mike – what an incredible ecosystem tucked away there? I had no idea there were rainforests so close to home. 🙂

Yes, it’s all the rain we get over here! Though, I guess, every cloud has a silver lining! 🤔

Yes, it’s very, very small, by some standards, but perfectly formed! 😊

I so enjoyed this walk, Mike, thanks so much. I found your explanation of the language fascinating. Welsh has always been an absolute mystery to me, and this was so interesting to learn. Very interesting about the mosses and liverworts, too, and how the rain and trees create this rainforest environment for them. They’re beautiful in the photos, and I smiled at the Welsh dragon. Lovely photos with the emerald hills, the river and bridge, gates, trees, overview landscapes. Wonderful post, thank you.

Many thanks for your lovely comments Jet. I’m really pleased that you found it interesting. There are so many nuances to the Welsh language, I could fill this blog with 100 posts and still only scratch the surface! I’m afraid I’ve dropped out of my Welsh lessons, but Jude is continuing and she actually took her Entry Level exam today. So we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that she’s passed. 🤞🤞

That waterfall is wonderful, Mike. Mosses creates a very special atmosphere, a little fairy-tale like.

Yes, thanks, Hanna. There’s a lot of moss around here (though I’m afraid it doesn’t feel like a fairy tale when it’s pouring with rain! 😉)

Yes, there’s enough rain! In Denmark too. The weather is crazy. Yesterday it was like spring, and in the coming week, the meteorologists are predicting snow chaos. We will see 🙂
PS Fingers are crossed for Jude!!

Some of the major warnings in the UK have passed us by, thankfully, either being further north or too far south. We just get wet and windy weather frequently, so it’s not much different! It rarely snows here too, which is one thing to be grateful for! Jude will find out in about 7 weeks from now. 🤞🤞
